Programme Notes:

The following piece is fully based on the main theme of Mendelssohn’s Violin
Concerto in E minor. It was written in celebration of Hamilton Philharmonic
Orchestra’s concert Gemma Conducts Mendelssohn.

Similarly to some of my previous works, this piece attempts to bring past and
present together in music, by exploring familiar ideas in experimental formats.
Instead of sounding linearly, Mendelssohn’s melody emerges from within itself,
starting in the middle of the orchestra and becoming more recognizable as it
circles around the ensemble, in an endless echo.

Ultimately, Echoing Mendelssohn reflects on how a familiar music material
from the past – from an inherited tradition – can sound new.
